A three-cornered hat with a wide, rolled brim and a low crown, fashionable in the late eighteenth century. Named after Louis Jules Mancini Mazarini, Duc de Nivernois (1716-98), and French ambassador to London 1762-3. Nivernois (now Nivernais) was the name of a former province of central France with Nevers as its capital.
