They made it into a film? I think I'm slightly appalled.
As far as I am concerned, Peter and the Wolf is best experienced sitting cross-legged on the floor of my childhood living room, listening to the record with the red tricycle with a wolf's tail hanging from the handlebars on the cover. All other versions have failed to measure up.

Prokofiev had a sad life, particularly at the end. Unlike other Russian composers, he stayed in the country until his death, engaged in a kind of grim pas de deux with Stalin, who took great delight in tormenting him, psychologically if not physically.
The final irony was that both men died within hours of each other. All fresh flowers within a 50-mile radius of the city were directed to Stalin's funeral, so that none were available for the grave of Prokofiev.
It is said that the string quartet who played at the official funeral rites for the despot did so with tears running down their faces throughout, not for the death of the monster, but for the musical genius he had systematically tormented over the previous fifteen years.
