rauschpfeife commented on the word rauschpfeife
The organ stop is named after the Renaissance wind instrument - an ancestor of the oboe, but with the reed enclosed in a chamber and blown through a slot in the top (a 'windcap'). Rauschpfeifes were the loudest of the wind instruments, used in outdoor ceremonial and processional music. Loads more info at http://www.lesession.co.uk/rauschpfeife
