Hm. I always thought this was spelled rievers, like, cattle thieves. I see OED has reaver listed as a preferred spelling and riever (like in the McQueen movie--wait, was it McQueen?) second. Learn somethin' every day!

c_b: I believe the name of the McQueen movie, and the Faulkner book on which it was based, is "The Reivers" (not "The Rievers").
Several dictionaries specify reaver as the preferred spelling. Reave is also the root from which the participle reft is derived.

Ah, see, I thought it was spelled "The Reivers," but looked it up in OED, got confused because I was in a hurry, and listed it "riever"! Thanks, sionnach. And reesetee--I love that word, but would not have made that connection. Cool.
