The "selfie" existed long before the smart phone. People were able to take photos of themselves or groups with the "self timer" on most 35mm film cameras from the 30's on. A tripod was helpful in most cases. You could also purchase a gadget with a timer which you screwed into the standard shutter release. This enabled you the ability to take selfies with most cameras, even view cameras.
