Also called Vinkensport, a centuries-old Dutch tradition in which male chaffinches are made to compete for the most number of bird calls in an hour. In the competition, a row of cages, each housing a single male finch, are lined up approximately six feet apart along a street. (Male birds sing to attract mates and establish territory, so the closeness is thought to increase the number of calls from each bird.) Every time the bird sings a correct terminating flourish--usually translated as susk-e-wiet, the competitor makes a chalk mark on a long stick. The bird singing the most times during one hour wins. Champion finches regularly sing hundreds of calls. In one case, however, an owner whose bird sang 1,278 susk-e-wiets was found to have doped the bird with testosterone.

It's thrilling, isn't it? Ah, sports...this is why I avoid them at all cost.
