I know that orange is reputed to be unrhymable. Bilby's contribution of Mr. Field's limerick sent me down winding ways of inquiry until I found myself reflecting on that odd kitchen implement, the porringer. It is that little bowl with ears that is almost always made of pewter. What is it for? Why does it have ears? How come some have only one ear? Where does its name come from? Where do any names come from? Why is English so damned irregular?

On Pewter Porringers

From "looter" we know there is "loot,"
So what use does a porringer suit?
Am I able to porringe
The juice of an orange,
And does pewter insinuate "pewt?"
