I remember there were vague rumours linking the Stones to Charlie Manson (hence Helter Skelter). Someone apparently thought 'Satanic Majesties', etc. was evidence of their evil ploys of mind control. It shouldn't have added it, it was total rubbish. But, oddly, the first thing that came to mind when I saw this list.

I saw Mick Jagger play in Jakarta in about 1988. Helicopter from airport to hotel rooftop, then from hotel straight in to stadium. Jagger, not me; I got there by roundabout 7 bus nightmare by the time I'd picked up my girlfriend Chorniyanti. Tickets were relatively expensive by Indonesian standards so the sods who couldn't afford the admission price were outside burning cars and storming the barricades. There were probably lovely special effects but the rubber smoke and noises-off riot were more memorable. I reported this afterwards to the friend I was staying with and he said in his laconic Indonesian fashion 'Lucky it wasn't the whole Rolling Stones. They would have destroyed the entire stadium to get in.'

I grew up listening to lots of Beatles and Stones and "classic rock" (Led Zeppelin, etc.) on the radio. The whole Satan-worshiping thing just confuses me. You write a song like Sympathy for the Devil or you buy Creepy Crowley's old house and people are like, "Whatever," but you say something about the popularity of Jesus and all of a sudden there are parties where they're burning your albums.

Hm. Maybe I should make a Beatles list. Is there one already?
