It depends on the brand. But I see your point--and I wanted to add cashew butter and almond butter anyway, so I've changed the name from "Things that aren't at all like peanut butter" to "Things people will tell you might be like peanut butter."

Peanut butter makes passable hommus, as long as it's the kind of peanut butter without added sugar (yeck). I'm quite promiscuous with hommus and have made it with black-eye beans instead of chick peas, lime instead of lemon juice, soy sauce instead of salt, etc. My life is one ongoing hommus experiment.

BTW I'm sure there are some of these buttery things made with seeds, e.g. sunflower.

I've found that people are very particular about the ratio of lemon juice to tahini, etc. I like mine with extra garlic and a little bit of extra lemon juice.

I'm opening the list--feel free to recommend whatever you like.
