Yes it was a real place. The name was changed a few years back as some found it offensive. There were businesses that must have suffered from the name change as they relied on tourists.
This maybe a tall tale but I was told the name came from gold seekers panning the Creek. You can guess the rest. Again that could be a tale told by some older folks.
