  • The capital and largest city of Uzbekistan in the foothills of the Tian Shan. One of the oldest cities of Central Asia, it was ruled by Arabs and then Turks until 1865, when it was annexed by Russia. In 1930 it replaced Samarqand as the capital of the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic.
