  • For Homer and pre-Platonic Greece aiode means both the art of epic singing and the song itself. Where the song does not survive the singing , no distinction between the two can be made. And epos means "words" or "utterances". Using the term in this sense, the "epic" and "oral" traditions (Koine) coincide. - Ivan Illich
