Carnism was coined by Melanie Joy, in 2001, in her book "Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows."
A possible definition might be: Belief system, or ideology, in which certain animals are eaten, while others are put to work, and a select few are brought into homes cohabit.

Carnism describes the invisible belief system that conditions us to eat certain animals. The ideology sees the wide-spread acceptance of meat-eating as 'natural', 'normal', and 'necessary'.
In addition, it sees its opposing ideology - veganism - as unnatural, and not 'normal'.
