Too long for a direct Wordie entry, apparently:

The longest excluding chemical names, anyway. Edit: note the disputing threads on the linked page. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longest_word_in_English notes: 'Some professional dictionary writers regard generic names of chemical compounds as verbal formulae rather than as English words.'

Right... according to fun-with-words.com/word_longest.html: 'Two chemical terms (3,641 and 1,913 letters long) have appeared in the Guinness Book of World Records. They were withdrawn because they have never been used by chemists, and there is no theoretical limit to the length of possible legitimate chemical terms. A DNA molecule could have a name of over 1,000,000,000 letters if it was written out in full.'
The second criterion seems a bit dodgy, since there's no theoretical limit to the length of a 'normal' word either.

I have a short word for that recipe, though: Blecch.

There's a reasonable chance that John put a 2^7 character limit on Wordie entries. I probably would have made a similar assumption if I were designing this.

Reesetee! You linked blecch without checking if it was on a list! I had to take it into my orphanage! Poor thing... Next time, check if it's on a list!

TSB, I'm afraid you have an erroneous opinion of why people bracket words. It's perfectly acceptable to bracket a word. Nobody "checks" to see if it's on a list first. Why would they?

palooka commented on the word longest word ever
The "longest" word is a series of repetitious chemical syllables & is really nothing to get worked up about. It doesn't add value.

reesetee commented on the word longest word ever
TSB, what chained_bear said. I often bracket words that I think other Wordies might want to add to their arsenal or that I've already added myself. But there's no rule saying I have to add it myself--or that you have to adopt it. (It's not an orphan until it's been added and abandoned.) Anyway, welcome to blecch. I use it frequently, and it comes in handy at times. :-)
VO and palooka, I'm with you--a long string of chemical syllables really doesn't seem "fair" when you're counting longest words ever.

I think if we had to check our contributions against an 'adding value' criterion before making them (short of not spamming, etc.) the outcome might not be altogether uplifting.

Well, that's the beauty of the site. You don't have to check anything before you add it. Or afterwards, either, if you don't want to.
p.s. I agree with the majority of comments on this page re: the longest "word."
