rolig commented on the word maecenas
From Gaius Maecenas (70-8 BCE), an advisor to Octavian (Caesar Augustus) and patron to Virgil, Horace, Propertius and other "Augustan" poets. His name has become a byword for a patron of the arts. In some languages, his name has become the actual word for "patron" (Slovene: mecen, Russian: меценат – metsenat).
