I think heroism is a degree of selflessness and courage in behaviour that many are capable of in varying ways.
I realise that utterly didn't answer your question. I did pretty much have a hero in real life. That ended when he didn't treat me very well. I now understand why he acted the way he did, although I didn't appreciate at the time being called 'a piece of shit' to my face by a Nobel laureate.
