"There’s a funny painting in Florence’s Uffizi Gallery. It’s called the Portinari Altarpiece and it was painted by Hugo Van Der Goes a long time ago. It’s a Madonna and Child, and those usually aren’t very funny, and this one wouldn’t be either if it weren’t for the fact that it looks like Mary has just dropped her baby. Mary stands there, arms outstretched, looking down at baby Jesus who is lying on the ground on his back.
