"My theory, for what it is worth, is that the other Germanic-derived Nordic cultures - the Swedes, Norwegians and Danes - had a greater sense, earlier, of being part of a Christian culture, one that turned its back on nature to focus on the soul and the eternal. The Finns, the Suomi, suomilainen ("people of the marshlands", in their language) - descended as they are from Uralic peoples, the culture of shamanism, and trance mysticism, and reindeer worship - wear that Europeanness more lightly. Beneath the ice of Lutheran tradition and European reserve, the waters flow."
