  • Essayist Joseph Epstein claims to have coined this word. (WSJ 11/5/14: A19) He says 'virtucrat' means, "those who derive their grand sense of themselves from the virtuousness of their opinions, and of no opinions more than their political opinions. These opinions fortify virtucrats morally, assuring them of their essential goodness."

Think of haughty Al Gore who demanded a carbon tax ten years ago, because he was so sure the polar ice caps would be gone by 2014. The Antarctic ice is bigger than ever now, and polar caps are vast. And he rolls his eyes with an air of haughty virtue at atmospheric science Ph.D's who disagree on the science and calls them 'deniers,' while Gore himself is no scientist.

  • Joe Epstein's pompous effusion

    Invites the unwary to confusion.

    Worse yet to be graceless

    And offend by unseemly intrusion.
