I used to like this word, but, for various reasons, it now reminds me of UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who I am finding increasingly disappointing and irritating!
Update on my last comment. The only thing I seem to have difficulty moving is "j'oublie tout, donc je suis :)". Is it something to do with the :) at the end?
Or maybe Wordie has a temporary aversion to French?
"Being in politics is like being a football coach. You have to be smart enough to understand the game, and dumb enough to think it's important." Eugene McCarthy, US politician (1916 - 2005).
I absolutely agree with Prof Ortega y Gasset. As a general medical practitioner, it really annoys me that specialists of one sort or another are afforded greater respect than are GPs.
In my opinion, it requires much more effort to maintain your skills as a generalist and with the increasing complexity of medicine there is a greater and greater requirement for non-specialists to give balanced advice to patients.
Fascinating, bilby. There have been many times when I would have liked to hang one of my own children on a wall peg: ideally without swaddling them first!
Personally, I don't think there is nearly enough swaddling going on. I would quite like to be swaddled on a regular basis.
I was glad this raised a few issues, and mollydot is right that I was brought up in a nominally Christian family with 2 parents that went to church. This may well affect my views.
To my mind, it doesn't matter a whit what anyone believes as long as they don't try and force their beliefs down someone else's throat. Tolerance is, I think, a key attribute of a good human being.
With the huge challenges our little planet faces, surely the things we have in common are far more important than the differences between us?
I don't understand this growing reluctance to mention things like Christmas. I am not religious at all, but I really enjoy Christmas. I can't see why using terms like "holiday season" improves relations between people.
Does anyone recognise this WeirdNet definition ("a black colloidal substance consisting wholly or principally of amorphous carbon and used to make pigments and ink") as what they think of as smut?
Bruit is also the term applied to the sound heard (with a stethoscope) over a narrowed artery (for example, the carotid). It is caused by turbulent blood flow.
Many thanks from me too, John! You have created yet another reason why I never have time to do any work. The site is becoming more and more interesting, and I will be fascinated to see how it develops in its second year.
I have a thing about tagging. I feel that a tag for a word in Wordie should be different from its definition. It should record a quality of the word that others might find useful in creating lists.
For example, I tagged the word "flaccid" with "stiffness" since, by my way of thinking, flaccid is used to refer to stiffness (admittedly a low degree of stiffness).
chained_bear thinks this is very odd. What do other Wordies think?

Some thoughts on parenthood:
"By the time a man realizes that maybe his father was right, he usually has a son who thinks he's wrong." Charles Wadsworth.
"Few things are more satisfying than seeing your own children have teenagers of their own." Doug Larson.
And finally, from Philip Larkin:
This Be The Verse
They fuck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.
But they were fucked up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another's throats.
Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don't have any kids yourself.

Warning
When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people's gardens
And learn to spit.
You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.
But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

People who add an 'm' should be neutered, or at least told off in a stern and serious way.
