Yikes! I should have read these comments before posting my own response on this page. It certainly could use a better home, too.
At any rate, I second, third, or fourth the welcome (I lost count)--hope you enjoy Wordie!

Hi alsanch1. I think your queries have been covered so I'd just like to say I have some basil seedlings to give away.

Your questions are more than welcome as comments on FAQ. Many Q&As are already on Wordie for dummies!.

Hi alsanch1. Sionnach explained everything pretty well (below) but as you've noted, if you have questions just pipe up and one of us long-time loudmouths will surely be happy to help.
It occurred to me you may have been asking about submitting a definition to appear at the top of the page, next to the word, in gray type...? If those are the definitions you are asking about, they come from a database called WordNET (which we like to call WeirdNET for its endless entertainment potential). There's no way for users to submit definitions that will appear as WeirdNet definitions, nor to edit those. (Though you can always post a comment referencing the weirdness and explaining what's wrong or what additional definitions you've found.)

Hi, alsanch1!
Welcome to wordie. To add a comment or definition for a specific word, just call up the list on which it appears and click on the word itself (it should appear in blue, which indicates it's clickable). This should open a comment box, allowing you to enter whatever text you like. When you're done, just click on the "comment" button below the box.
However, if all you want to do is add a definition, you should be aware that definitions for most words are already easily available. When you click on a word, a little row of different colored icons will appear below it. The fourth icon from the left (it's yellow) links to Onelook.com, a dictionary site, and - if pressed - will immediately bring up a screen with definitions of the word in question from a wide variety of dictionaries. So, for all but the most obscure words, there is little value added by your placing the definition in the comment field. (In fact, doing so tends to annoy some of the site users, who may point this out to you again, hopefully in a polite manner).
Similarly, another of the icons links to Wikipedia, so including material from Wikipedia is generally done with some judgement (e.g. if the Wikipedia entry is a gazillion pages long, people may sometimes paste in one or two relevant paragraphs).
It is considered good Wordie etiquette to attribute citations appropriately - you can get a feel for how other users do this from reading their contributions.
I hope you enjoy the site. Cheers!

alsanch1 commented on the word may irritate other wordizens, but is nonetheless irresistibly charming
Pardon me for interrupting but could you tell me how to add a definition for a word I have submitted, please?
