I was tempted to respond along the lines of: watch a child with lego or in a sandpit and it's easy to see that the building/collecting 'mentality' is basically coupled to our intellectual curiosity and so there was probably always a certain % of the pop'n that would carry on with it - without it necessarily becoming a profession - or revert back to it when fortunes or circumstances allowed.
