You needn't take my comments personally... :-)

I do think intentionally alphabetizing lists up-front makes it hard to expand them later, if you discover more words you'd like to add. By doing so initially, you approach your list as if it were to always remain finite; once you hit "z" (or whatever) you'll never touch the list again. You can do as you please with your lists, of course, but I try to keep mine open-ended. Enjoy my two cents, they're on the house.

Yeah, it occurred to me it would be all kerflooey if I wanted to add to it later, but... at the time, I didn't care. :) Also, it occurred to me, I have enough freakin' lists, I can make one go kerflooey if I want to.

I've come across the singular, I think, probably in books. But I suppose the reason for the preponderance of the plural would be that cloves come whole, not typically ground or as tiny seeds. Just as you 'd say "bay leaves" instead of "bay leaf" when describing the plant generally. On the other hand we say "star anise", not "stars anise", don't we?
