You're right. I totally forgot to migrate the account over. Bummer. :-/
-
Hey, do you remember the password to Wordplay? I think we must have made it with your e-mail, b/c none of the password recovery e-mails are showing up in my inbox?
:) Jen
-
just checking for a pulse. good to see you're still alive. ;)
-
hi Parker, what's up?
-
Sometimes more eager than able, but I try :-)
-
Ok, pronunciation pages on profiles should now show up to 1000 pronunciations. That covers all but a few fanatics. I'll add pagination next week.
-
The 50 pron limit is a bug, which I'm working on...
-
I think quite a few of those pronunciations were over on bilby's Take This Word And ... list (corrrect it still makes me laugh).
Things seem to keep moving along, though there've been fewer colloquies and cupcakes lately. And, of course, it's always better when you and some of the other folks hang around for a while to play--I'm glad you're here.
-
704 pronunciations? That's nuts. I had no idea it was so high. How do I see them all? Looks like my pronunciation page only shows the last 50.
-
"Parker Smith has created 118 lists, listed 4,752 words, written 4,104 comments, and added 418 tags, 156 favorites, and 704 pronunciations."

Thanks for fighting the good fight on beg the question.
-
I love your list of Scripted Apathy!! I don't know why I haven't come across it before.
-
Parker, thx for the additions to the 1 syllable animal list! Just saw them.
-
Oh man, pronunciations! This'll get me hooked again. Well, Excuuuuuuuse me, princess!

I absolutely adore your pronunciation of choo choo train. It's so side-splittingly funny!
-
Hey mate. I just reactivated my account, too. Good to see your name here.
-
About my pronunciations: I didn't see how to preview them. But in any case, I think my microphone is fried. I am enjoying your pronunciations, by the way.
-
Hello, cocker! Glad to see you back.
-
I actually put my name in there on purpose... maybe I should value my anonymity higher? Although, I use this name on so many web sites, if someone really wants to know who I am it won't be hard to sleuth. Why fight it? ;-)
-
Psst, your profile page is under your real name, so you might want to tweak your settings. You know, to keep up the uselessness mystique.
-
This is the best news I've come across in recent memory: Uselessness returns to Wordie!
-
Oh, he's alive. Check out the Wordie Facebook group. :-)
-
Are you still alive? Should we have a Wordie wake?
-
And in my hour of uselessness
-
Good grief. We've lost another one.
-
Glad to be of service, Darth Treeseed. ;-)
-
Thank you for your help with the Noxema/Noxzema debacle. I love this site. What fun! Words are so cool.
-
Dhaero is pronounced "Dhare-oh", similar to "Dare-oh" but the "D" is slightly softer.
Glad you're a fellow Dr.Paul supporter. I'm smitten by him, and am one of the "band of loyal supporters" creating tiny, colorful, handmade signs to stick around town. But it's not looking good for him. :(
-
Thanks for compliments on Dhaero's name. I created the word but the root is "aero". (That's meant to be a diphthong in there, however, I don't yet know how to type it as such because I'm a technology looser).
-
Zoiks! Welcome back...er...dangerousness.
-
Uselessness you're becoming such an essential part of modern life and its signature gadgetry.
-
After eleven years of using this pseudonym around the internet, the first article about me has finally been written.
-
Proud to say, the names on my marquee list are "madeupical", as far as I know. If any are already in use, the band is very obscure. Confession time: my list was inspired by your "band" list. But then you probably already suspected that. =^+^=
-
Hi. You seem to be a large and engaging presence here; a good person to know when just joining. I like your lists very much and all else to be learned about you from your exchanges with other members. I adore words but am somewhat intimidated by the vast vocabularies of folks like yourself. My current mission here is to find a parsifal word to name my new son. His brothers are Odyssey and Meridian. Any ideas?
-
jenna and rejen. problem solved. :)
-
That sounds good! Bet the guy made for interesting conversation, too... :-)

Hey Jen! (Yikes, now there's two Jens around here *tries not to get confused*)
So there's really no way to send private messages on Wordie yet, but yeah, a note on a profile is cool. Thanks for the kind words! I also enjoy rummaging through your letter-lists and finding nuggets of randomness. :-D
-
I'm still trying to figure out the nuances of this message system, but 'Hi!' Your lists are a thing of beauty. -grin-
- Jen
-
I take full responsibility, I know better than to suggest such a thing.
-
Haha, that's hilarious! It's funny, I noticed that immediately after I finished the last line, the site went "down for maintenance" so I figured you were probably doing something like that. :-)
Actually I was hoping you might, because while I love leaving that little rabbit trail as an easter egg for future generations to discover, I felt bad about cluttering things up with it all today. So, nice compromise. :-)
-
Hi U, it cracks me up that you put the entirety of the beer song up, but I got a confused email from a new visitor, wondering what that was doing on a site for logophiles :-)
I hope you don't mind, but I filtered most of them from the front page, so that it didn't completely overwhelm everything else for the weekend. Hope you don't mind -- email me if you do.
-
Oh, I was out most of last week, but Sera and erinoftheyear admirably stood in my stead. Now all we need is a pun war, and we'll be back in business.
-
Thanks, oroboros! Looks like you really did have the site more or less to yourself last week, along with jennarenn. Great to see some infrequent and new posters also getting in on the fun, too. :-)
-
Welcome back y'all. I felt like I had the site to myself last week! Zoomed to the top of the citations list. King for a day! Yay!
-
I'm a usual suspect (I presume), and I was gone last week. But I'm back now too. Welcome back, uselessness. Hope you enjoyed your trip. :-)
-
Actually, I think we all timed it rather well. Many of the usual suspects were gone last week.
-
I hate leaving on vacation because I miss all the fun on Wordie...
but I'm back now. :-)

Hi Jen! Afraid I don't know the password either. I don't have it in any of my email inboxes, and I didn't receive the password requests you generated. I tried a few standard passwords I use for things like this and none of them work. Are you sure the user still exists on this site? I can't remember what the procedure was for migrating accounts over from Wordie.

Merry Christmas to you as well! I see that you are not a native English speaker, which excuses some of the perceived spamminess (machine-generated translations share much in common with machine-generated ads). And I apologize for my rudeness earlier.
Though if I may add, I believe the definition of conspiracy theory is something like "an unconfirmed claim of two or more parties conspiring in a clandestine manner." Whether the logistics of the conspiracy are plausible isn't really the issue. I have no doubt that some conspiracy theories are true, but as long as they remain unconfirmed, they still belong in that category. This is just semantics though.
December 24, 2009
uselessness commented on the user petrbuben
Why do you put a URL in every comment, petrbuben? It's kind of, well, spammy's not the right word... actually, on second thought, spammy is the perfect word.
We like to have conversations around here without every statement including a call to action. Endlessly repeating links makes you sound like a used-car salesman, more interested in your agenda than actually Wordnikking with other people. Try commenting on some pages unrelated to 9/11 and see what it's like to use the site without peddling your conspiracy theory. You might like it.

uselessness commented on the word have yourself a merry little christmas
I actually like the song quite a lot. The lyrics and tune are beautiful. It's just that one line that always sort of rubbed me the wrong way. Anyway, the real question here, is what is the difference between a Christmas carol and a Christmas song?

I don't think they exist, but Wordnik was designed for all languages. Though most of us here speak English, there are plenty of citations for words in other tongues too.
Pro tip: Don't post your email address in plaintext anywhere on the internet. Spambots scrape the web looking for them and you will receive more junk mail. Best to edit your comment and delete that part, if you ask me.

I hope this isn't too ethnocentric of me, but I have to wonder how such a counterintuitive language ever developed. The human mouth and vocal chords make certain sounds naturally, and it seems like you'd really have to go out of your way to communicate like this instead.

I can't get my mind around this one. We're talking petty theft on a scale so small you'd be hard-pressed to buy a Coke with the spoils. And yet, these guys organized? And further, law enforcement thought it worth their time to bust up the whole ring? As if it even had leaders or a traceable member list or regular meetings in a secret hideout somewhere... uselessness commented on the word pronunciations
I noticed a wave of new pronunciations this morning. They seem to be coming from a bunch of new users and all have the same noticeable background noise that sounds like a lecture hall or trade show floor. Is there some sort of Wordnik demo happening today that I don't know about?
Also, some tips for recording: Don't eat your microphone. Preview the recording before saving to make sure that your voice was not too loud or soft. If you were too loud, you will hear distortion from clipping. As you record, watch the red circle that enlarges with relation to your volume; if the red circle at any time fills the circle that surrounds it, you were too loud and your audio will be distorted. Don't blow directly onto the mic or the percussions will distort the signal, this often happens when enunciating plosives too close to the microphone (if you're whistling, face away from the mic).

Particularly on word pages that don't have any comments or lists associated with them; they're basically untouched apart from the crazy audios file hanging off them. Accidentally finding them, I hope, will bring a smile to people's faces.

How do you eat spaghetti? I'm told that the "proper" way is by using a spoon to keep the noodles in place as you wind them around the fork like a spool of thread. I usually cut all the noodles into bite-size pieces I can eat easily with a fork, but I'm told this makes me uncivilized, oafish, and uncouth. I'm also told Asian folks typically eat noodles (maybe not spaghetti) by dribbling them from their mouths and slurping them all up, which may be acceptable in certain cultures but strikes me as the most barbaric of all.
Friends, I need a definitive answer to this very important question! What is the right way?

Linked from beetlestomper. Meaning, apparently, sniffing the whole box of markers for a cheap high. Holy crap! Does anybody remember the Sideways Stories from Wayside School series? Author Louis Sachar wrote himself into them as a character with a rainbow-colored mustache... I wonder if this is what he had in mind at the time. Certainly changes an innocent set of children's books, if so.

uselessness commented on the word wordnik
I was one of the original Wordies but I haven't been active on the site in close to two years. (teardrop) So I'm sure there's a buttload of community that's been built and a gajillion cool things I've missed during my absence.
When I got the email announcing the site had been Wordnikized, I took the opportunity to jump back into things and see what's changed. And much to my cryonic surprise, it doesn't seem like much has at all. Which may be a downer if you're super-progressive about internet roadmaps but I thought it was just swell to find things in a similar state to when I had left. There are some new faces but a lot of familiar ones also. There are some icky bugs but there were plenty of bugs back on YOW too (if those were fixed after I vanished, I never knew). WeirdNet and Vexamples are practically interchangeable. Plus, now we have PRONUNCIATIONS, which I think are freaking cool.
Not to mention, John has multiplied himself into no fewer than 5 busy bees—in an office, no less—and knowing that the resources behind this thing have quintupled feels downright liberating. I'm stoked.
Suck it, whiners. (I mean that as a brother among cherished brethren, with all due respect to my fellow Wordnikkers.) My experience may be… incomplete… but this is still one of the best corporate takeovers I've been part of and I have only optimism for the future of this crazy lexicommentary web site thing. Why so serious? Drive around the potholes and try to enjoy yourselves! Cheers!

That's funny, this phrase always seems to make sense when used in context. On its own, though, I'm not really sure what it's supposed to mean. It's on par with saying "that's really something" with a sly tone and a knowing look. As if such a phrase has any literal meaning at all.

I'm assuming the database is filled with many "words" that Wordnik auto-assimilated by crawling the web. So they'll show up with the Random feature even though they've never actually been seen on the site with human eyes. Which is different from Wordie, which required that all words be manually added to the database by users.

We can leave our marks on words without composing scintillating comments. Yesterday I went on a small rampage of recording pronunciations for every thing Random Word threw at me (apart from foreign stuff I knew better than to guess at). I had particular fun with online handles and product names. I heartily encourage others to do the same.
If you're in a good environment for recording the audio (sometime I am, sometimes I'm not) you should do this for every word you ever come across. It only takes a few seconds. If there's already a "professional" recording for the word, and your accent/pronunciation is the same as it, there's no need to be redundant. But my experience with the random feature has been that the fast majority of words on the site have no accompanying audio at all.
