Q: How many months have 28 days?
A: All of them.

You can also use your knuckles. Start at the left knuckle on your left hand. That's January. It has 31 days. Next, point to the space between that knuckle and the following. That's February. It has fewer than 31 days. March, May, and July round out the knuckles on the left hand. April and June are in the spaces. After July, you switch to your right hand and August is on your first knuckle. Etc., etc., etc. I promise that it's easier than it sounds.

Jennarenn, I just start over on the same hand instead of switching--it has the same effect.
I have always used the knuckle calendar and find it very handy.
Get it? Handy?! I slay me.

What is this knuckle calendar you speak of? How very strange are your customs.

Who decided all this, and why couldn't they have used a logical system?

I could never memorize this as a child because so many months (and numbers) could fit into those rhyme/syllable spaces ... you could say:
Thirty days hath October, January, and December. All the rest have thirty-one.
Or, for that matter, you could say:
Seven days hath October, January, and December. All the rest have seventeen.

"It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen."

this is the version I learned growing up
30 days hath September,
April, June and November,
All the rest have 31,
Excepting February alone.
Which only has but 28 days clear
And 29 in each leap year
"Who decided all this, and why couldn't they have used a logical system?"
They tried that after the French revolution. Didn't work out so well for them, as I recall. But then they were trying to incorporate 10-day weeks and 10-hour days as well; so much for the Enlightenment. Napoleon scrapped it all eventually and went back to the old system.
