How I have missed you!!!!!!!!
Welcome back. Hope to see you around more often! If I can ever find time to hang out here, that is. Grr.

Chained is still here, AZ, but now with the added bonus of a cub. So my guess is that she's pretty busy, mostly. :-)
-
Pretty please...?
-
Please pronounce you're something of a hotdog, aren't you.
-
Thanks, guys. I'm going to try to check in more regularly now. Glad you're all still around. And Chained_Bear?
-
Welcome back, AZ. :-)
-
You're back! Missed you, dude!
-
Hey, how delightful to see you again!
Ran across Pahdon me; I fahted. the other day and laughed out loud—made me miss New England.

AZ! You're back! Welcome home! What have you been up to? :-D
-
A_Z! Is it really you? You are sorely missed.
What have you been up to?
-
Just visiting....
Kind of quiet and dusty around here....
*sigh*
-
Why, yes, I am--well, not exactly 'from' the North Shore, because I have lived in so many places that I am not from anywhere really, but I lived--yes, in Lynn!--for five years, and New England and the Boston area in particular is more home than any other place has been so far. I see you have a New England wordlist: wicked awesome! :D The names of places and things in those parts are terribly fascinating.
-
Fascinating. Funny how I get all excited thinking I'm interacting with exotic people from foreign lands and no, you're a bloody Yank. ;-)
And I figured that was a Korean name or something. Color me ign'ant. I'm a walking stupid American stereotype. Although the name actually has an increased coolness factor for me, now that I know it's got cool obscure meanings and isn't just "Joe" or "Bill" in another language.
-
If I tell you that I'm an American English major teaching English in S. Korea, can I still keep the compliment?
Abraxas is the name of a gnostic god. Zugzwang is a chess move where you force your opponent to make an unfavorable move. There are a number of pronunciations, but I believe the correct way is toosktsväng.
-
I've got to ask: how do you pronounce your name? I keep thinking it's "abe racks iss zugs wang" but I've probably butchered it with my typical American naïveté. Is that your actual name or a pseudonym? I'm incredibly unaware of Korean names, spellings, and accents. I should compliment you on your excellent English skills as well; is it a second language for you?
-
Thanks najp!

abraxaszugzwang commented on the list the-great-firewall-of-china
Last I heard, China had 40,000 internet police scanning for improper internet use. When you hit upon a suspicious site, a happy, animated jingjing, or police officer, appears on your screen giving you a wag of the finger. If you're not careful, your door will get kicked down in the middle of the night.
In 2006, Yahoo helped China gain access to journalist Shi Tao's email. Tao was arrested and faces up to 10 years in prison.
For those of you in China who wish to surf anonymously and get around the firewall, you can use proxying tools (though at your own risk), such as anonymouse.org, Freenet, and TriangleBoy.

Thanks chained_bear! I agree that dickhead does not necessarily impugn the morals of the subject; I think it can, though not in the same way slut does. Also, I don't use it to mean "one who thinks with his penis." Curious who uses it to mean exactly that.
I already listed cocksucker and am glad someone mentioned the issue of sex. I tend to think this refers more to a woman sucking than a gay man. I think I'll add suck my dick to the list, especially as I've heard women use the phrase. I know this list aims to level the playing field, but that phrase is bad enough coming from a guy and is even worse from a woman. C_B, wouldn't, then, sucking be a positive action? I think fuck it or fuck you fits with your point though.
Oh! I just remembered the notorious suck it from the WWF (WWE).
Again, I truly don't think of anything negative when I hear bitchin'. And there are various explanations of balls to the wall. A couple can be found here.

February 25, 2007
abraxaszugzwang commented on the list it-s-a-man-s-world
I had never heard that one pamelad. I looked it up and found this: Oddly, in British English it is not these days a vulgarism, or at least only a very mild one. It comes from one of several senses of cock, to bend at an angle, as in — for example — cocking a gun or turning up the brim of one’s headgear (so producing an old-time naval officer’s cocked hat).
The use of cock-up to mean a blunder or error was originally British military slang dating from the 1920s. The slang sense of cock clearly had a lot to do with its adoption, but this hasn’t stopped it being used in respectable publications, and modern British dictionaries mark it merely as informal or colloquial.
I'm including it in the appendix because I think what matters is how people conceive a word. balls to the wall, for instance, has nothing to do with testicles, but that's what a lot of people think of.

abraxaszugzwang commented on the list it-s-a-man-s-world

February 25, 2007
abraxaszugzwang commented on the list it-s-a-man-s-world
I like Wordie because it can help you wrap your mind around the way words are used. This list is similar to my "too many faggot scenes" list, only this issue has been plaguing me for a lot longer. I would never classify myself as a feminist, but would perhaps call myself a Post-Feminist.
I've noticed an unsettling tendency (in men and women) of using male-oriented terms to describe something positive, while female-oriented words describe the negative. There are exceptions, such as bitchin', but I think the exceptions are few. Maybe I'm wrong. Help me list and define words and phrases with a male bent. If there are exceptions, they'll go in a new list.
Also, I'd love to hear any insight you have as to why this occurs.

abraxaszugzwang commented on the word axe handle
Axe Handles
Gary Snyder
One afternoon the last week in April
Showing Kai how to throw a hatchet
One-half turn and it sticks in a stump.
He recalls the hatchet-head
Without a handle, in the shop
And go gets it, and wants it for his own.
A broken-off axe handle behind the door
Is long enough for a hatchet,
We cut it to length and take it
With the hatchet head
And working hatchet, to the wood block.
There I begin to shape the old handle
With the hatchet, and the phrase
First learned from Ezra Pound
Rings in my ears!
"When making an axe handle
the pattern is not far off."
And I say this to Kai
"Look: We'll shape the handle
By checking the handle
Of the axe we cut with—"
And he sees. And I hear it again:
It's in Lu Ji's We Fu, fourth century
A.D. "Essay on Literature" - in the
Preface: "In making the handle
Of an axe
By cutting wood with an axe
The model is indeed near at hand."
My teacher Shih-hsiang Chen
Translated that and taught it years ago
And I see: Pound was an axe,
Chen was an axe, I am an axe
And my son a handle, soon
To be shaping again, model
And tool, craft of culture,
How we go on.

"From the Rotunda, visitors walk into Statuary Hall. This room was once the meeting place for the House of Representatives. However, it became Statuary Hall in Eighteen-Sixty-Four after the number of lawmakers grew too large to continue meeting there. Another name for Statuary Hall is the “Whisper Chamber.? This is because when a visitor stands at one end of the room, he or she can hear what people at the other end are saying. The shape of the room with its high ceiling creates this unusual movement of sound waves."

Recently, Tim Hardaway made some hateful comments about gay people. When I read the headline, I was under a particular impression. What I thought he had said is, "I don't like gay people. I am a homophobe." He did say those things, but he went on to be hateful. It made me wonder about people who have an actual phobia. I bet the media would jump on a person who admitted to having an honest-to-goodness phobia just the same as hate-speech.

I already have a list for "painful tags," but this particular prejudice has recently been discussed and I thought I'd start my own list. I'm always hesitant to list controversial terms for fear of backlash . . . but I'm also of the mind that ignoring something doesn't make it go away.
I'm not sure what would lessen the impact of certain slurs. I've said before that I don't think trying to make an insult yours (as with nigger and fag) works. I suppose it's just better education and, possibly, the dismissing of terms as jokey that would help, though plenty of people contend that that's dangerous in itself.

Still, there are certainly such things as gay words in most people's minds and that thinking is not reinforced solely by straight people. For instance, on gay pride day at my college, I remember that the gay population sidewalk-chalked fag everywhere. I didn't think that was very positive nor did it seem to help their situation. Much like black people trying to make the word nigger their own. It doesn't work because we're all still well aware of the negative origins.

abraxaszugzwang commented on the word gkol
The Bunlap people perform an ancient ritual called Gkol, in which men tie vines to their ankles and jump headfirst from platforms jutting out from a tower. The jumper's fall is broken by the vines, the other end of which is tied to the tower. A sloping surface of softened earth at the base of the tower provides some protection from injury in case of a broken vine, a vine of incorrect length, or a poor jump. Gkol inspired the modern sport of bungee jumping, though the vines used are far less elastic than bungee cords, and the Gkol jumper does not bounce up at the end of the fall. The Gkol legend says that in the village Bunlap a man called Tamalie had a quarrel with his wife and she ran away and climbed a banyan tree, (which some recall as line in an old and admired song) where she wrapped her ankles with liana vines. When Tamalie came up to her, the woman jumped from the tree and so did her husband not knowing what had his wife done. He died but the woman survived. The men of Bunlap were very impressed by this performance and they began to practise such jumps in case they got in a similar situation. This practice transformed into a ritual for rich yam harvest and also for proving manhood.

Let us now speak according to natural lights...Let us then examine this point, and say, "God is, or He is not." But to which side shall we incline? Reason can decide nothing here. There is an infinite chaos which separated us. A game is being played at the extremity of this infinite distance where heads or tails will turn up… Which will you choose then? Let us see. Since you must choose, let us see which interests you least. You have two things to lose, the true and the good; and two things to stake, your reason and your will, your knowledge and your happiness; and your nature has two things to shun, error and misery. Your reason is no more shocked in choosing one rather than the other, since you must of necessity choose. This is one point settled. But your happiness? Let us weigh the gain and the loss in wagering that God is. Let us estimate these two chances. If you gain, you gain all; if you lose, you lose nothing. Wager, then, without hesitation that He is.
