My go-to is NEATS and ROUGH ... covers off the most common (in English words) vowels and consonants. @vendingmachine, interesting tactic not trying to find an 'e' first thing!!
The end of Wordie was definitely the end of an era.... but sure doesn't mean what followed was bad. It's nice to log on after long hiatuses and still see the same names (or same users in your case vendingmachine!!) hanging out :) warms the heart
Again, I'm sorry if this has already been brought up- and I am assuming it has: the comment boxes aren't expanding. And when I click my profile name, I just get the 'new interface' page.
I'm not sure if it's only me now but I really miss the old interface. The simplicity of it made Wordnik so homey and casual but now it seems rather cold and, for lack of a better term, 'try-hard'. I liked the names above the comment (it flowed much better) and there was no need for these dividers between comments and sections on a page. The old layout on the word pages was clear and simple. The sections being side by side as opposed to being underneath each other was neater, even if you did have to wait for it to load...I don't want to winge about everything, and I don't mean to be rude and grumpy but I honestly don't know if this new style is going to work for me.
It just seems a bit messy and overwhelming. I liked everything on seperate pages.
Also, the black on the top sort of feels like it's closing in on me... I can't figue out (as Pro says on new interface) how to find the formatting box.
I usually go "Then bilby got his ears caught in the frivolous blades of the... ." (No space, ellipsis, full stop. It's hard to do on Wordnik, but on Word it comes out much neater.) I haven't really thought about it before.
What about quotation marks and inverted commas? Many books these days use inverted commas for speech. eg. Bilby said, 'My ears are stuck!' as opposed to "My ears are stuck!". I personally prefer " as speech marks.
In my corner of the world and in my corner of Australia, 'whilst' isn't commonly used but when it is, it doesn't sound unnatural or pretentious either.
I think it could possibly be a dying word...
I'm intrigued by what rolig said about 'putting a comma after a quotation mark'-- example please? Speech marks or inverted commas?
In my experience, which admittedly is limited, most genericised trademarks aren't capitalised except in a few select cases (which I can't think of right now). I'm quite comfortable with using googled but if someone told me I was wrong and it really mattered I suppose it wouldn't hurt to use a capital, even if it does look a bit funny.
In short, Zalgo is a faux-Lovecraftian internet-based mythos typically accompanied with mangled text and vague implications that Zalgo will soon be destroying the world/the poster's sanity/humanity. Zalgo is not necessarily an entity, but is more of a concept, much like Lovecraft's "The Colour Out of Space."
Yeah- I went to bed last night just after the first statistic came out, disappointed that I was going to miss the results. Now I'm up again (after a very restless night dreaming of this game) and we're still not finished!

'A Greek word meaning 'for the prettiest one' which was inscribed on the Apple of Discord that essentially started the Trojan War.'
Well, I don't know anything about Ancient Greek (or modern Greek for that matter) but I'm assuming the above definition is correct. Does anyone know enough about the language to confirm?
I think we need a good party round about now to celebrate barbarous words. Who's with me? I guarantee plenty of phony umbrage, and fufluns. Maybe even some cupcakes with hyphens.
English isn't a language that follows rules as rigid as thsoe of Latin or classical Greek or even more modern languages like Italian and Spanish. The variety and spontaneity is what makes English such a special and unique language. I'm personally a big fan of it.
That poor guy though... have to feel sorry for people who are too hip for their own good. I know the pains of being too cool. I'm always in my jumper (or a coat if the occasion arises to look more hip).
I'm not really a herby sort of person I have to admit (sorry yarb). Let's just say I'm not going to bother going out of my way for coriander but if it happens to cross my path (which is fairly unlikely) I'll give it a go. That way I can stay in no-man's land for a while.
Um... that's coriander, right? I actually haven't had that much experience with the stuff but it is stirring something in my distant memory. Would you recommend it?
If italic means (according to Century Dictionary): '(lowercase or cap.) Of Italian origin: designating a style of printingtypes the lines of which slope toward the right', then what's the name given to writing that slopes to the left?
I remember in the early days of my schooling we learnt to use brang instead of brought in a certain tense, but I can't seem to recall what that tense was. Comparing both words on Wordnik (where else would I go?? ;-) ) I can only find that brang is 'dialect, colloquial, informal'...
'Community' sounds sort of cold to me. The Zeitgeist heading was more Wordie/Wordnik-like. I didn't even know an imperative existed for changing the name.
I exclusively use bubbler, which may (or may not, mind you) be a little childish, but I have never actually heard anyone say 'drinking/ water fountain' except on the screens or in print.

What better place to initiate one than on the bottom of Identify the Wordienik?

Does anyone know why Brits use -re while Americans use -er? Surely it's not arbitrary. And similarly, how about -ise and -ize?

I'm not really a herby sort of person I have to admit (sorry yarb). Let's just say I'm not going to bother going out of my way for coriander but if it happens to cross my path (which is fairly unlikely) I'll give it a go. That way I can stay in no-man's land for a while.
