Reading this thread, I was surprised to see how this song was interpreted. I have never thought of it as dark or patronising before. It just seems...well...a song of hope?: looking to the future, in a way.
According to this source: There is a distinction between a Christmas carol and a Christmas song. A Christmas Carol has a fairly rapid, regular beat, which would, therefore, exclude a meandering, crooning song such as “White Christmas”.
I positively adore this word when used as 'love'. But it really annoys me when people overuse it or use it for things they really don't luff deep down.
And I especially like it when someone's accent disallows them to properly pronounce 'love' and thus producing 'luff' instead.
Oh my dear Ru, when will you learn to cough anagrams into the bowl like all refined ladies and gentlemen? Alas! Am I forced to retrive my book of manners yet again?
Sorry for the abrupt and probably rather rude farewell. I was almost literally being dragged away from the computer as I was typing that and thus, I was unable to explain.
You'll never catch me abandoning wordie (wordnik)!
Anyway, I just went out of town for a while, and there was no internet connection. Thankfully, I'm back for Christmas!
Please help my list Awesome Pronunciations! It's more of a Wordnik collection than my list and I am absolutely positive and terrified of missing a pronunciation. (-oops, mistyped that as pornunciation. Heh, I'm sure we wouldn't want that.)
Good advice uselessness, for when I finally get a microphone.
What is happening when I try to add words to a list and when the page reloads it switches me to another view? I'm not sure what it's called but it only shows me the list and links in basic html and I have to go back to my profile to get the normal view again.
Briefly, in response to ththownse question, I'd like to point out that society is almost split when it comes to attitudes about homosexuals. Indeed, the world in general's almost split. Canada legalised homosexual marriages for example, though the rest of the world hasn't. What you have, is one part of society condemning homosexual behaviour, not, I think, for its 'vulgarity', but rather for the way that it defies the 'laws' of conventional marriage and sexual relations. However, there is a part of society that is all about acceptance and they fully support homosexual behaviour.
Thanks mark! :-) Feel free to contribute as many pronunciations on the list as you see fit. There are many awesome ones yet to be discovered (and made, no doubt).
Being very fussy with ratios in food myself, I must admit that breaking ramen chained_bear style is reasonable, because it's for the overall benefit of the meal.
I wonder what Chinese angels say about eating 'raw' ramen?
Not many people can wiggle their ears. I certainly can't do that either. But I can bend almost all my fingers so the middle joint sticks out and if I push, it can go back nearly 90 degrees. hyperlaxity.
Personally, I prefer spaghetti, but I have great respect for ramen too. They are all welcome at the dinner table in my house! (or the breakfast, or lunch table too ) ;-)
For ramen, it's all about slurping. No cutting, no twirrling, just slurping no matter how long, so it's important not to sit with a straight back for once.
Congratulations on that crown frogapplause! Use it wisely... I liked your pronunciation. ;-) It really annoys me when people say pasta with a short 'a' sound. They make it sound like some sort of commercial marketing blah-di-blah.
Smooth. Not gooey like nutella, and not the sort or texture of peanut butter either. It almost blends in with the bread in a way that you don't even notice that you're eating it, except you feel that one side of the bread is rough and the other side is smooth.
And never, under any circumstances, refrigerate vegemite.
'Slightly' bitter plus two steps I'd say. If you are going to to lose your vegemite virginity, I suggest starting with a very thin spread with rather a lot of butter. If you start with too much, you end up hating it for life, which would be quite a shame.
(The Penguin (last time I checked anyway) is in the sandpit in the backyard)
Heh, I see. We do. And ! always eat their food shouting. It's terribly noisy, not to mention messy. Eating spaghetti is an experience always accompanied by many strange glances in my general direction.
I also have a habit of eating half a sandwich, then opening it up and eating the inside but that leaves me with plain bread which is very annoying. Surely you understand??
How do you ensure only two or three strands get on your fork? Scrape them off the top then twirl? Do you twirl horizontally? Usually I plunge my fork into the middle of my bowl/plate and twirl vertically (which may or may not be considered 'uncivilized, oafish, and uncouth').
Of course it's all a play on cultural sterotypes (which by-the-way, I find fascinating and amusing though sometimes offensive).
I'm sorry, touched up on my research and I think that everyone knows now, that the Chinese did not invent spaghetti. I didn't think so, and I guess I'm right.
Delicious Filipino drink consisting mostly of ice, milk, red beans, chick peas, coconut shavings or slices, yam, rice and jackfruit. It's usually served with ice cream on top.
Well, that almost killed spaghetti for me. I remember when I was small, my mum used to make me eat the bone marrow of some exotic dish we used to have. I cried. No, I didn't actually, but it was pretty bad.
And with the slurping issue, as long as it's quiet, short and doesn't flick up onto your face, spraying sauce around your nose, like a bolognaise moustache.
Bilby, is there something about spraying spaghetti that ignites your creative genius or does the wallpaper add another flavour?
I'm not sure about rt, but I consider it an insult to the spaghetti, and I'm sure the Italians can say something about it too. I was always under the impression if the dangling strands from the twirl around your fork are too long, you cut them with your teeth.
I'm interested in other ways though.
Does anyone actually have spaghetti with meatballs?
Someoneone once told me that peanut butter and jam is good. I've had that many times, of course, and it's not bad, but on that particular day I misheard him and thought he said 'ham'.
So I went trooping home for a nice peanutbutter and ham sandwich.
For the record, it was actually very nice.
But vegemite goes with ham and cheese beautifully all the time.
I use the 'proper' way, but without the spoon. I also had a friend who used the proper way, but she would pull her fork out of the spaghetti, leaving a little twirl on her spoon which she ate from.
1 year later: I'd like to point out that JKR has, to a certain extent, destroyed this word among the younger generation. You can make a perfectly decent, if not forceful, statement or complaint: "I take umbrage etc..." and your audience will roll on the floor laughing because they have an image of you taking Professor Umbridge.
Of course it depends on the general age and maturity of your audience, but it annoys me rather a bit.
Snap! There goes my spelling again, out the window. I wonder how I could have possibly gotten that wrong, maybe something to do with my lousy pronunciation?
Nibble off opposite corners and place one end in mug of boiling water. Suck the water up the Tim Tam, melting the chocolate and burning your fingers in the process. The first person to finish their Tim Tam wins.
Well...I'm never going to be bored again, not with this fantastic list. I mean, who wouldn't want to do these things! I never thought exercising and exorcised ghost would be so fun!
Really? I'll read it for sure at some point, but I've been banned from buying anything at the moment due to some erratic spending I've done in the recent past.
Ha! I thought that too for a moment but then I was struck to the bone by the disturbing thought of unicorns and fairies eating skittles. *crunch crunch*
As we all know, Hot Wheels has the greatest tracks of all affordable time. The way the cars zip around those vertical loops is just exhilerating. Ok, I'm exaggerating, but apparantly it's possible to do a vertical loop with a car life size, with a little help from g-force.
I think really, in the end, Wordnik will be what the Wordies (and wordniks) make it. All technical glitches can be resolved eventually, but the spirit depends entirely on the people. If the spirit relied on some website, then it wasn't true spirit and I'm sure that isn't the way it was.
What's really troubling me is the disappearing Wordies.
bilby, I think you're particularly right about the Twitter. It really doesn't tell you anything about the word at all, except how other people misuse or abuse it and I also agree about that random word bit...unfortunately. Yesterday I was on and off all the time, but nothing much was happening at all. I know there will be some slow days, but there was nothing and I fear that there will be more of that.
I know it's going to take time, but these last few posts are going to make me cry.
:'(
Edit: By-the-way John, I took so long to type my post I missed yours. I'd just like to say we still really appreciate all the good intentions and understand how difficult it must be for you too.
Is it possible that *gasp* Wordies are questioning their existance??
No, I agree with a lot that 'nach said. I know that when I type the address I type: wordnik.com/zeitgeist. I don't even bother going to the opening page anymore. Zeitgeist is the opening page. However, in response to sionnach's last question, I think it would be the Wordies, and the comments that attract 'talented fresh blood'. With no comment on my talent, that's what I found most appealing about Wordie when I first joined (including the list making).
In relation to all those technical glitches, I've been relying on time to straighten them out.
I'm not entirely sure what point I'm trying to make, except maybe patience is the way to go? I don't think anyone's trying to be negative, but realistic.
I don't know what to say...isn't the very essence of Wordie humour? Isn't that the stuff we were allowed to import when switching to Wordnik? Wordie Spirit
Maybe I've misunderstood someone...?
(VO, I think you hit the nail right on the head, so to speak.)
I thought that was only my machine. I was trying to search pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis and got it wrong 5 times before I gave up...all thanks to the autocomplete (more auto, less complete.)
Yum! ;-) But then again, people do eat honey ants... raw, and wichety grubs and things like that too. Toasted ants don't seem so bad compared to some things.
Exactly my point. Somewhere along the line, someone has to make up the word.
(Please don't confuse a word with a random bunch of letters that sound nice together stuck onto a meaning. I can't accept that, and I think I'm justified. Correct me if I'm wrong.)
Haha! Two questions: firstly, did that really happen Vanished, or was it by pure genius that you came up with that? and secondly, uselessness, you didn't really bang your knee when recording that pronunciation did you?
Yay! We now have 'most commented' on the side of the Zeitgeist page! The only thing is, the links don't seem to work.
At least, some of them don't. List of the day seemed to work, but the others like comments, bugs and cake (yum!) didn't. It lead to a 404. (Nice sign by the way.)
I don't know if it's just me, but your pronunciation for: 'Der dicke Dachdecker deckte dir dein Dach, drum dank dem dicken Dachdecker, dass der dicke Dachdecker dir dein Dach deckte' isn't there. Have you deleted it? If so, then I request it back. ;-)
"Woman, I told you, I'm not at her house. I'm at the store! Hold up. Hold up. Ma'am? Excuse me, how you doin'? Could you do me a favor, please, and just tell her I'm at the store? "
I imagine this word to be undulating and waving gently, streaked a strange combination of light blue and light brown, surrounded by miniscule green and yellow squares.
At first I read this as 'tomato garden privacy' and I began wondering what the world was coming to, but then I re-read it, and wondered if there really was such a thing.
What's that list that has the sounds of a piano being pushed off a balcony (or something similar)? I love to hear someone have a go at those pronunciations.
I think the transition was ok, not to say there's nothing to be perfected, but I'm sincerely hoping the Wordies will stick around and wait, because that's what makes the spirit we don't want to lose!
In an old textbook I came across by chance (long story), it mentions sausage tree and umbrella tree. I hadn't heard of them before but I thought of this list!! ;-)
I've had that experience before! Except I was the one elected to squish head-first through a tiny window directly above the toilet. Not pleasant, let me assure you.
Personally, I like the name Ruddymite but I know it would never be chosen.
And I'm so glad they want to re-name the iSnak...it was a bad idea in the first place (long live vegemite! long live cheese! note the separation) but couldn't they have chosen something a little better?
Causes burning, tingling, and numbness of mouth, throat, and stomach, eventually affecting the entire body. It develops into a stomach ache, dizziness, prostration and convulsions. You die in a few hours if you have a teaspoon full.
In a few minutes, the muscles start convulsing, beginning with the head and neck moving down to the back. The victim finally dies of exhaustion and paralysis of the neural pathways that control breathing. According to Wikipedia: it produces some of the most dramatic and painful symptoms of any known toxic reaction.
Results in vomiting and diarrhoea and very bad stomach pains. You can die within an hour. It used to be very popular in the Victorian times, as paint and dye.
It builds up and damages the kidneys and the brain. If you've been poisoned pretty badly, you go insane, your skin becomes yellow and your teeth fall out of their black gums.
Botulinum travels through the blood and attaches to the nerves that control muscles. It effectively shuts down the system and the victim dies an agonising death.
Cyanide has a very similar molecular structure to oxygen. Therefore, when inhaled, it latches onto oxygen molecules and this prevents the cells of the body from using it.
Remember that you are a human being with a soul and the divine gift of articulate speech: that your native language is the language of Shakespeare and Milton and The Bible; and don't sit there crooning like a bilious pigeon.
You find me cold, unfeeling, selfish, don't you? Very well, be off with you to the sort of people you like. Marry some sentimental hog or other with lots of money, and a thick pair of lips to kiss you with and a thick pair of boots to kick you with.
The great secret, Eliza, is not having bad manners or good manners or any other particular sort of manners, but having the same mannr for all human souls. In short, behaving as if you were in Heaven, where there are no third-class carriages, and one soul is as good as another.
This could potentially be a misspelt word. According to dictionary.com: quiddity is 1. the quality that makes a thing what it is; the essential nature of a thing.
2. a trifling nicety of subtle distinction, as in argument.
The Melbourne trial of a stripper accused of violating the best man at a bucks’ night with a strap-on pink dildo will decide the crucial issue of deliberate penetration against the unusual suggestion of possible 'accidental rape'.
When I am in trouble, eating is the only thing that consoles me. Indeed, when I am in really great trouble, as anyone who know me intimately will tell you, I refuse everything except food and drink. At the present moment I am eating muffins because I am unhappy.Besides, I am rather fond of muffins.
I don't play (the piano) accurately- anyone can play accurately -but I play with wonderful expression. As far as the piano is concerned, sentiment is my forte. I keep science for Life.
"I do not approve of anything that tampers with natural ignorance. Ignorance is like a delicate exotic fruit; touch it and the bloom is gone. The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."
Hey gangerh! I'm still waiting for the comment on procrastination, then I figured I'm not supposed to reply to you on my own profile. whoops, teehee...well, I'm still sorta new here.

And there he sits, munching and gnawing, and looking up at the great cross on the summit of St. Paul's Cathedral, glittering above a red-and-violet-tinted cloud of smoke. From the boy's face one might suppose that sacred emblem to be, in his eyes, the crowning confusion of the great, confused city--so golden, so high up, so far out of his reach.
Does this word have a short or a long 'e' in its pronounciation? I should use one way but personally I use a long e when talking about a fever, but short when talking about agitation and the like.
"Applebee’s International, Inc. is a United States company which develops, franchises, and operates the Applebee's Neighborhood Grill and Bar restaurant chain," said Wikipedia.
According to Wikipedia: The term colonel derives from Latin columnella 'small column'. However, it was never actually a Roman rank. The system of ranks in the Roman military was quite different. As a rank the term arose in the late sixteenth century Italy where it referred to the officer in charge of a column (Italian colonna, plural colonne) or field force. The term is first attested as colonnello, but it is perhaps a truncation of something like capitano colonnello 'captain of the column, the captain designated to command the column'. In this context colonna seems to refer to a force marching in column, rather than to a battle formation — a battle or battlation of pike.

Thoughtcrime, they called it. Thoughtcrime was not a thing that could be concealed forever. You might dodge successfully for a while, even for years, but sooner or later they were bound to get you."
"I do not like broccoli and I haven’t liked it since I was a little kid and my mother made me eat it. And I’m President of the United States and I’m not going to eat any more broccoli. Now look, this is the last statement I’m going to have on broccoli. There are truckloads of broccoli at this very minute descending on Washington. My family is divided. For the broccoli vote out there: Barbara loves broccoli. She has tried to make me eat it. She eats it all the time herself. So she can go out and meet the caravan of broccoli that’s coming in."

Mousqueton was a native of Normandy. HIs real name was Boniface, but Porthos thought this sounded too namby-pamby, so he changed it to the more impressive name of Mousqueton.
I'm going to disregard yarb's comment for the sake of my half-digested breakfast. And you're probably right, madmouth, about the caption. It reminds me of a Filipino dish (the name escapes me) of pork, cooked in its own blood that's used for sauce.
Definition in the mathematical sense: "A group of rational, integral functions, which, when severally multiplied together, the sum of the products vanishes identically."
Harsh derision or irony: a sharp ironical taunt; sneering or cutting remark, usually intended to wound.
Sardonic:
Bitter derision, usually ironic: intended to be humorous.
Difference: Sardonic and Sarcastic
Sarcasm is more general than sardonicism. It can be humorous (at the cost of others), acidic, dry, or similar. To tell the 'type' of sarcasm, you must know the context.
Sardonicism implies a negative view of something. It's sarcasm with an ill tone, even if it's used for humour. Someone can use sardonicism but it's obvious that he isn't too comfortable with subject.

Haha! Very sweet!

PossibleUnderscore commented on the word It sucks
Briefly, in response to ththownse question, I'd like to point out that society is almost split when it comes to attitudes about homosexuals. Indeed, the world in general's almost split. Canada legalised homosexual marriages for example, though the rest of the world hasn't. What you have, is one part of society condemning homosexual behaviour, not, I think, for its 'vulgarity', but rather for the way that it defies the 'laws' of conventional marriage and sexual relations. However, there is a part of society that is all about acceptance and they fully support homosexual behaviour.

PossibleUnderscore commented on the word wordnik
I think really, in the end, Wordnik will be what the Wordies (and wordniks) make it. All technical glitches can be resolved eventually, but the spirit depends entirely on the people. If the spirit relied on some website, then it wasn't true spirit and I'm sure that isn't the way it was.
What's really troubling me is the disappearing Wordies.

PossibleUnderscore commented on the word wordnik
bilby, I think you're particularly right about the Twitter.
November 29, 2009
PossibleUnderscore commented on the word wordnik
*wrings hands nervously*

And there he sits, munching and gnawing, and looking up at the great cross on the summit of St. Paul's Cathedral, glittering above a red-and-violet-tinted cloud of smoke. She dwells with Beauty -- Beauty that must die;
And Joy, whose hand is ever at his lips
Bidding adieu; and aching Pleasure nigh,
Turning to poison while the bee-mouth sips;
Ay, in the very temple of delight
Veiled Melancholy has her sovran shrine,
Though seen of none save him whose strenuous tongue
Can burst Joy's grape against his palate fine;
His soul shall taste the sadness of her might,
And be among her cloudy trophies hung.

PossibleUnderscore commented on the word colonel

PossibleUnderscore commented on the word convulse
“The rising power of the United States in world affairs requires, not a more compliant press, but a relentless barrage of facts and criticism. Our job in this age, as I see it, is not to serve as cheerleaders for our side in the present world struggle but to help the largest possible number of people to see the realities of the changing and convulsive world in which American policy must operate.?

PossibleUnderscore commented on the word mutilate
“The source of most human violence and suffering has been a
hidden children's holocaust throughout history, whereby billions
of innocent human beings have been routinely murdered, bound,
starved, raped, mutilated, battered and tortured by their parents
and other caregivers, so that they grow up as emotionally crippled
adults and become vengeful time bombs who periodically restage
their early traumas in sacrificial rites called wars.?

PossibleUnderscore commented on the word sardonic
